OUR FEE STRUCTURE
Our fee structure is simple:
1. We have a minimum fee of $30 AUD for any project. That's our starting rate.
2. For that, we critique and line edit up to 3000 words - that's roughly 8-10 pages - which takes in most first chapters.
3. If you've written a longer first chapter, don't despair. Add $1 per 100 words. Thus 3900 words, or approx. 12-14 pages, would still only cost $39.

Chapter One Edit is an Australian company. We quote and accept payment only in Aussie dollars (AUD).
If you happen to be a writer living in the US or Great Britain, you have an enormous advantage, because the Australian dollar is currently at a low. At the time of writing, a $30 AUD critique would cost a US citizen just $26. US, and a British citizen 16.65 GBP (as of 9/1/2010).

NO HARD SELL
Many on-line editing companies and POD publishers offer cheap, or even free, 'sample' critiques of one or two pages. These are subsequently returned with 'advice' that your manuscript shows great potential. These are words you've been longing to hear. Of course, such exciting news is usually followed by a quote for proofreading services for the full manuscript - maybe $1000 -$2000, or an offer to publish your book at your expense.
Our policy
Chapter One Edit has no affiliation or business arrangement with any self-publisher or printer. We are independent editors. We will not give you the 'come on'. Indeed, we refuse to evaluate the marketability or publishing potential of your manuscript. The publishing industy is notoriously fickle: consider how many top publishers turned down the first 'Harry Potter' manuscript! We don't like to indulge in speculation.
When we finesse your first chapter, our job is done. We will not plague you with offers or deals, nor will we even suggest that you should have the remainder of the manuscript edited. That's a promise.
Most certainly, you can approach us about an edit on your entire manuscript - editing is our business. We handle large projects through our sister-site Oz-Edit Proofreading Service. (It's still the same team. Our Oz-Edit site is open for student essay editing as well as manuscript editing.)
If, at some stage, you make the decision to have your entire manuscript proofed or edited, we are confident that the quality of the work we have already done for you, and our competitive rates, will bring you to our door. No need to push!
